| It's a good idea in theory, but it would probably remain unopened. |

A Christmas present idea |
|
I think this year I am going to type up some family recipes, put them in plastic sleeves, and then put them in a binder. I intend to get those plain white binders at Sam's Club that have the clear plastic sleeves so I can get some scrapbook paper and cut it to fit and be more interesting than a plain color, but hopefully not too busy or cutesy.
Would you appreciate something like this yourself? I'm lazy, and if no one would really want one, I don't want to bother. I have some recipes typed up already, but this could be pretty time-consuming unless I set specific goals. Useful, awful? I'd really like to know either way, or even if you're indifferent.

I would. In fact, I've been meaning to do something like that just for myself using all the random scraps of recipes I have all over the house, lol. Good idea!

Ditto. I have recipes scattered around the kitchen and my computer. Some are on 8 1/2" x 11" paper, some are little pieces cut from boxes or can labels, some are blurbs from the fresh meat packages. I really need to get them organized.

I've thought about this too. When I was a kid my grandma actually gave me a cookbook that had like 1 or 2 recipes only for each section and blank pages to write in your own recipes. The front cover even said "My Favorite Recipes." I haven't always kept up with it writing stuff in it but I do stuff note cards from other people or clippings & printouts of recipes I like. My plan is to do sorta like you & make a scrapbook but instead of pics in it stick in printed out recipes. My handwriting sucks so it needs to be typed up. I'd maybe even put in a pic of the finished dish. I think you're on track with a great idea!

It sounds like a lovely idea. I am going to try and cook more now that Wert is so busy with work. (You'd think it would slow down around Christmas, wouldn'tcha? Mind you I shouldn't complain with the economy the way it is.)
Hopefully, these recipes are for people with short attention spans and devoting as little time to cooking as possible. Do they MAKE recipes like that? It has been my undying shame as a woman, but I have been that way all my life and am not going to fight it now.
Sorry, didn't mean to derail. I voted yes

Sounds like it's a go then. Maybe it will be more successful than the year I did bath salts and milk baths. My mom still has her cute little packages in the guest bath, which wasn't exactly what I intended ;p

Who has time to take a full-fledged bath? In this day of fast living, hopping in the shower is the way to go. But everyone has time to eat

I voted yes...but with that goes the fact that I am NOT the cook in the family...I have no talent for cooking of any sort other than basic recipes and pre-made items... (yeah..didn't get my dad's cooking genes...my brother got those)...

Thanks for the encouragement ladies. Everyone seemed really appreciative. My sister even asked for me to email her the index so that she could add to it. My aunt saw the one I gave to my grandparents and wanted one too. So apparently it was worth the effort ; )

Awesome. Have any pictures of it to see how it turned out? I really want to make a cookbook too of family recipes.

Xenith: I didn't make one for myself, so I will get back to you on the picture thing. I could email you, or anyone else interested the Word document with the table of contents and recipes, if they wanted?
I just took a blank binder, and two sheets of textured scrapbook paper in a nice foresty green. I cut the paper to fit, and a strip for the spine of the notebook. I got some scissors that cut scalloped edges, with the half circles. I used some cream-colored paper and folded it into smaller sections. I cut a rectangle approximately 2X3, or 3X3. I wrote in cursive with a black gel pen "Favorite home recipes." I then used rubber cement to attach the cream-colored rectangle with scalloped edges to the front sheet of green. Make sure and let the rubber cement dry, or it will deform the clear plastic cover of the binder. Put the spine strip and back sheet in, print out the table of content & recipes, put the printed pages in clear plastic sleeves, and put the sleeves pages in the binder. Not super complicated. The cream-colored rectangle was purposefully glued on at an angle, so that I didn't feel compelled to measure a perfectly straight placement.
So if anyone wants the Word documents just send me your email address in a pm ; )
